An Authentic Experience

Anastasia Scangas, LCSW, MSc

Anastasia graduated from Loyola University Chicago with her M.S.W. in 2016, with a concentration in adult mental health. Her journey was a bit non-traditional: she moved to Chicago in 2011 to pursue a Ph.D. in chemistry. In her limited free time, she became involved with several social justice and reproductive justice organizations, which introduced her to the world of social work.  After three and a half years of chemistry, Anastasia decided that it wasn't the right fit for her, and left with a master's degree to attend Loyola University School of Social Work. While at Loyola, she focused on mental health care for disproportionately impacted and under-resourced communities.

After graduating from Loyola, she worked in community mental health and inpatient psychiatry, before moving to private practice. Anastasia continues to wear her scientist hat, routinely pulling from the current research and distilling both chemical and neurologic knowledge and information for use in the therapeutic space. There is so much new research coming out linking genomics, biology, and chemistry to mental illness that we can say for sure, it is not "all in your head."
